How to find and use course reserve materials.

Using the Course Reserve Collection in the Library

To check an item out from Reserve, present the desk attendant with your ETSU ID and the title, instructor, department, course number, or call number of the material you wish to view. (Hint: The call number provides the most direct access to the material. If you know the call number, the desk attendant will be able to retrieve the material more quickly.)

When using reserve items in the library, please keep in mind that:

The following policies apply to the use of reserve materials borrowed from the Sherrod Library's main Circulation/Reserve desk:

2-Hour Loans (in-library use only):
Items circulate for two hours only.
Items may not be taken out of the library.
Overdue fines accrue at the rate of $ .50 per hour, including overnight hours or other hours when the library is closed.
1-Day Loans:
Items are due before library closing time one day after they are charged.
Items may be taken out of the library.
Overdue fines accrue at the rate of $1.00 per day.
3-Day Loans:
Items are due before library closing time three days after they are charged.
Items may be taken out of the library.
Overdue fines accrue at the rate of $1.00 per day.
Returns:
The borrower is responsible for returning reserve materials to the Circulation/Reserve desk within the time frame of the loan. Items left in library copy rooms or on library tables are not always routed to the Circulation/Reserve desk and may remain charged to the borrower. As a result, you could be billed for overdue fines and possible replacement costs for these items. The best way to avoid a problem is to return all reserve materials to the Circulation/Reserve desk.

Using E-Reserve

Q1. How do I find out if my course has readings online on E-Reserve?
A1.You can ask your instructor. If online readings are available, your instructor can give you the URL for the web page, along with any special access instructions that may be required.
You can also search the online catalog. Search by instructor or course, and click on the Submit button.
Q2. What do I need to get to E-Reserve readings?
A2. You need a web browser (Microsoft Internet Explorer, Netscape, Opera, etc.), Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.0 or higher, and an Internet connection. You can download Adobe Reader for free. To access E-Reserve from outside the ETSU campus network (e.g., from your dorm, apartment, home) you will need to sign in using your ETSU e-mail name and library barcode number. For more information please read the instructions on How to Connect.
Q3. Why do I need a user name and password to view E-Reserve materials?
A3. Copyright regulations require that only only students officially enrolled in ETSU classes be permitted to have access to documents on E-Reserve.
Q4. Why is only part of the reserve material for my course online?
A4. Due to copyright restrictions and problems with scanning certain types of materials, we may not be able to offer all course reserve materials in an online format. Processing documents for electronic reserve can be time-consuming and is done as the material is received.
Q5. Some of the articles are difficult to read on the screen. Can the quality be improved?
A5. Most of the online material is scanned from photocopies and various other sources. The screen quality depends upon the quality of the original material submitted. Charts, tables, and images with dark backgrounds do not scan well. We also try to balance the degree of resolution vs. file size for optimum output and fast downloading. Depending on your printer, the print quality will usually be better than the screen quality. Remember, for easier viewing you can always enlarge the page size by clicking on the magnification icon in Acrobat Reader.
