Distance Learners

Welcome Distance Learners!

Distance Education students enjoy the same library privileges as on campus students. The Services for Distance Education Students Guide shows you how you can access many of the resources that the library has to offer. Using your ETSU username and password, you will be able to access library resources using our off-campus access options. We hope you will make full use of the materials and services we offer at Sherrod Library.

Sherrod Library has a full-time Distance Education Librarian dedicated to helping Distance Education students with their research and ensuring students have the tools they need to succeed.

  • We offer Document Delivery and InterLibrary Loan.
  • We will send books to students’ who live more than 30 miles away.
  • Text, phone, chat and email reference services are available through Ask Us!.
  • Remote research consultations are available by appointment.
  • Students are able to borrow books from other Tennessee academic libraries, using the Tennessee Academic Library Collaborative (TALC) Card.

Connecting to eResources from Off Campus

Faculty, staff and students can access library resources from within Desire 2 Learn.  Also, when logging in from off-campus, users will be prompted for their username and password which is used to log in to course software, goldmail, etc. Make sure to also sign into your OneSearch account when using the library’s resources.

If you do not know your username, do a "people search" of your own name from the ETSU homepage.  When you forget your password or it expires, visit the Office of Information Technology's help page.  This will allow you to change or reset your password.

Borrowing Materials

Distance learners may borrow regular loan print materials available at the main ETSU campus and materials not owned by the University Libraries by using the online ILLiad form.  Requests are mailed or emailed to off-campus locations and arrive within five days to several weeks, depending on whether ETSU owns the item or whether it needs to be requested from another university. Review the Interlibrary Loan policies.

Course Reserves

Some instructors assign readings and place those materials on course reserve. Distance learners can use the electronic materials but hard copy items cannot be mailed. Students should place an interlibrary loan request for course reserves; some items can be borrowed from other consortial libraries.

TALC Card Information

The Tennessee Academic Library Collaborative Card can be used at all TN State Colleges and Universities. To request a TALC card, kindly fill in this form, the link is also provided in the side bar. You will need to provide your name, Goldmail email address, and home address to process the TALC card. For a complete list of institutions visit the TALC Universal Borrower’s Card page.
